PROJECÇÕES2011 [Drawing for FBAUP]

Sala de Exposições Temporárias | Temporary Exhibitions Room

Lugar do Desenho – Fundação Júlio Resende has become known since its creation as a place dedicated to showing, thinking about and promoting drawing.
Its formal name – the Júlio Resende Foundation – celebrates an artist in whose work great devotion to drawing can be perceived, and its poetic name – the Place of Drawing – indicates that this is one of the locations for this artistic expression.
Invisible or only sensed in works of art over the centuries, created to underlie painting or survive only in the studies of sculptors and the preliminary designs of architects, drawing gained unprecedented visibility in the 20th century when its status as an independent process was recognised, albeit without denying those usual dimensions. In the transition to the 21st century, it acquired a new impact with the emergence of specialised institutions and collections, major exhibitions and collective action to raise awareness to this artistic practice.
The Exhibition of Drawings by Final Year Students at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, at the Júlio Resende Foundation, is therefore another opportunity to achieve its plans and address the issues that drawing raises in the contemporary cultural world, through the experiences of students in an educational institution still linked to Júlio Resende, who was a student and teacher there.

In a cycle that we have been celebrating and wish to continue celebrating, we have been holding an annual exhibition at Lugar do Desenho of a selection of drawings that have been done during the academic year in the School of Fine Arts at Porto University.
Coordinated by Professor Jorge Marques, appointed for the task by a committee from the drawing sub-unit, the fresh look of our students on the core discipline that affirms and attests to the quality of this School is thus revealed in an institution that we highly esteem. I offer my thanks for his work and dedication.
In fulfillment of an obligation, we record, once again, the recognition and gratitude that are due to the Board of Lugar do Desenho in the person of its patron, Professor Júlio Resende, the incontrovertible tutelary figure of art and drawing in Portugal: our great thanks.

Head of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Porto

Continuing the cycle of exhibitions entitled PROJECÇÕES – Drawings by Final Year Students of the Fine Arts School of the University of Porto, this year drawings produced in the Drawing Practice module will be shown at Lugar do Desenho - Fundação Júlio Resende.
This is an exhibition that, above all, asserts the space of drawing from a perspective on drawing that is thought out, worked and produced in a “learning” context. This is also a form of “school” – to answer emerging questions on the role of drawing in contemporary society.
For the Fine Arts School at Porto University, the importance of drawing is interlinked with its history. It is also this “school” that is turned into memory and provides a view for the future. Today, as in the past, the teaching of drawing is not only structural, but increasingly asserts itself as an independent space for research and affirmation of the art of its day.
The collection of drawings presented is the result of individual choices and very diverse performances in the field of drawing.
These choices are also the affirmation of a space of searching, in the sense of an autonomous drawing that is an end in itself. Drawing that is made to be a drawing. This is a precondition for the way in which drawing is thought about. In this sense, each project enacts its way of understanding and asserting the nature of drawing. Each process describes the way in which each individual solves and positions him or herself towards the discipline of drawing (itself).
It is perhaps this set-up of self-reference that generates such distinct processes and performances.
In this context in which drawing is thought out and realised, drawing practice is an independent practice, in the sense of understanding its very nature, between the boundaries of a discipline and the possibility of its transposition.
This exhibition of drawings is also the recognition of the importance and affirmation that drawing has had in the context of contemporary art.
