Continuing the cycle of exhibitions - PROJECÇÕES – showing drawings by final year students at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, at Lugar do Desenho - Fundação Júlio Resende, this year the drawings from projects undertaken in the Drawing Practices module are exhibited.

The collection of drawings presented are the result of very diverse individual choices and performances in the field of drawing. These choices are also a statement about a space of research in the field of drawing, as a self-sufficient discipline, whose purpose is in itself. The drawing that is made to be a drawing. This is a decisive change in the way of thinking about drawing. In this sense each project enacts its way of understanding and stating the nature of drawing. Each process describes how each artist addresses and positions him or herself in the understanding of the discipline of drawing (itself).

It is perhaps this device of self-reference that generates processes and performances so different from each other.

Drawing Practices fall within this context, where drawing is thought out and realised as an autonomous practice to understand its very nature.
This drawing exhibition is also the recognition of the importance and the affirmation that drawing has known in the context of contemporary art.

The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto at Lugar do Desenho

This event is important and makes perfect sense in marking the cooperation between these two institutions that once again have come together to exhibit and think about drawing, that is the structure and origin of both of them.
In one case, the men of business and commerce in the 18th Century, and in the other, the Patron of Lugar do Desenho, the painter Professor Júlio Resende, to whom this Faculty and this country owe so much. Both wanted drawing, the source of everything that exists and that is made, as the enunciating principle of thought, to be discussed and studied for its permanent enhancement. Today we celebrate yet another initiative that has been successfully coordinated by Professor Jorge Marques, whom I thank for his efforts on behalf of the Academic Board.
A word, too, of our great appreciation, on behalf of the Faculty of Fine Arts, to the Board of Lugar do Desenho, in the figure of its Patron, who is the greatest exponent of Drawing today and for all the generations who will appreciate and study him: our very sincere thanks.

Francisco Laranjo, Chairman of the Academic Board of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto
