CUMULONIMBUS| PAULO LUÍS ALMEIDA

Sala de Exposições Temporárias | Temporary Exhibitions Room

The idea for Cumulonimbus emerged from the lost documentation of a performance carried out in 2012, on the street of a disabled industrial site. This action, in which a colourful paraglide was manipulated to match the configuration of the body to the architecture of the factory, was recorded in video at the time. The video showed the various attempts of raising the paraglide in the narrow street, shaping its outline to the structure of the building roofs, like a wayward cloud.

The loss of these images and the absence of live visual testimonies (apart from some photographs that survived), had become the focus of the reconstruction and remembrance of this micro-narrative through drawing.

Returning again, from this distance, to the drawings that were made as part of the dialogues kept with the shooting crew and the production of the performance, as well as the drawings made afterwards as ways of recovering the inner representation of the action in progress, is going back to the virtual space of the performance, in that moment when the event had not yet taken place.
These drawings act as testimonies (to Paul Ricoeur, a testimony is a category of the trace). They are statements that bind us to a live event impossible to be addressed directly through other means, protecting it from oblivion.

These are past tense drawings, formulated by an eye committed with the event, where narrative, fiction and imagination emerge as strategies of inscribing the real in the common frame of an experience.
