PEDRO VALDEZ CARDOSO | Hic Sunt Dracones

Sala de Exposições Temporárias | Temporary Exhibitions Room

Sinopsis

Hic Sunt Dracones, is the title of a series of 26 unpublished drawings, made for Lugar do Desenho – Fundação Júlio Resende. It is also the first exhibition exclusively dedicated to the drawings of Pedro Valdez Cardoso, whose artistic praxis lies, above all, between sculpture and installation.
In this new body of work, the combination and fusion of animal and human bone structures creates random patterns similar to those we find in cartographic records and in drawings from the archaeological field. The title of the exhibition (and of the series) is a Latin expression that means: “Here are the dragons”, an expression used in mediaeval times to mark areas on maps unknown to Man and mostly considered to be dangerous.
Hic sunt dracones is therefore presented as an allegory for the path taken by mankind in its incessant desire and need for knowledge, these imaginary maps appearing sewn into the central pages of folios, open books for your exploration.
